What is a Cliche?

(According to Webster's Dictionary): a trite, stereotyped expression; a sentence or phrase, usually expressing a popular or common thought or idea, that has lost originality, ingenuity, and impact by long overuse, as sadder but wiser, or strong as an ox.

Emergent Design

  1. Design strategy that sets up certain initial conditions for unpredictable results to happen within the logic of complex adaptive systems behavior.
  2. Design in which the result is not predetermined.

Atmospheric Centric Design

  1. Design strategy based on generating effects to create climate conditions rather than geometries.
  2. Design which focuses on the conditions of the occupant.

Natural/Artificial

  1. Old fashion dichotomy that has no longer room in the era of re-production.
  2. The dichotomy between natural and artificial geometries.

Virtual as Digital

  1. Understanding the virtual as a non-real digitally reproduced space rather than the space for possibilities to occur.
  2. The misappropriation of the term virtual to mean exclusively work done digitally.

Network Geometry

  1. Literally connected translation of net concepts to physical geometry.
  2. Geometries marked by the connection of nodes to create lattice like geometries. Branching algorithms and Delaunay triangulation are two forms of networking.

MetaPhor(m)

  1. Relating concepts or ideas from other fields literally as elements for design.
  2. Use of metaphors as arguments for shaping.
  3. The direct translation of a metaphor to a buildings form.
